| Summary | 0000479: freeradius crash when status-server enabled and proxy server is unresponsive | ||||
| Description | freeradius-3.0.21-40.el9_4.x86_64 will crash when configured with a home_server and status_check = status-server and the home server is not responding. The issue also affects upstream freeradius versions v3.0.27 and v3.2.5. It is fixed in v3.2.6. The fix is in this commit (https://github.com/FreeRADIUS/freeradius-server/commit/3a9449539e4c5a74c85685cad6abe6edf412f701). It was also applied to v3.0.x branch (https://github.com/FreeRADIUS/freeradius-server/commit/3448cd0dc1c6fb7842cda2bb1223256062b39ff7). I have applied the patch to Almalinux version of freeradius RPM. It applies cleanly, RPM builds and the crash is fixed. Almalinux freeradius-3.0.21-39.el9_3.x86_64 is not affected, only release 40 is buggy. | ||||
| Steps To Reproduce | yum -y install freeradius Add to end of /etc/raddb/proxy.conf: home_server server1 { type = auth ipaddr = 192.168.0.1 port = 1812 secret = secret1 status_check = status-server } home_server_pool server1_pool { home_server = server1 } realm DEFAULT { nostrip auth_pool = server1_pool } Start server: radiusd -X In another terminal try to login: radtest user@somewhere.com pass1 127.0.0.1 1 testing123 The server will try to proxy requests to server1, will receive no response and send access-reject back to radtest. It will also start sending status-server packets to server1 and crash: (0) Proxying request to home server 192.168.0.1 port 1812 timeout 30.000000 ... (0) No proxy response, giving up on request and marking it done Marking home server 192.168.0.1 port 1812 as zombie (it has not responded in 30.000000 seconds). PING: Waiting 4 seconds for response to ping (1) Sent Status-Server Id 0 from 0.0.0.0:39123 to 192.168.0.1:1812 length 70 (1) Message-Authenticator := 0x00 (1) NAS-Identifier := "Status Check 0. Are you alive?" PING: Next status packet in 30 seconds ... (0) Sent Access-Reject Id 251 from 127.0.0.1:1812 to 127.0.0.1:34426 length 38 (0) Finished request Waking up in 3.9 seconds. No response to status check 1 ID 0 for home server 192.168.0.1 port 1812 Segmentation fault (core dumped) | ||||

Hi matejv, Thanks for the detailed report. Could you help us with the testing? - Source: https://git.almalinux.org/rpms/freeradius/commit/0662efeff3ae57e560516529aaa80896003d6f7c - Build: https://build.almalinux.org/build/19450 Instructions: dnf config-manager --add-repo https://build.almalinux.org/pulp/content/builds/AlmaLinux-9-x86_64-19450-br/ dnf --refresh upgrade freeradius* |

Hi Sorry for such late reply. I must have missed the email notification for your reply. I installed freeradius as per your instructions but radiusd crashed because current AlmaLinux comes with openssl 3.2 and RPMs were build against openssl 3.0. So I rebuilt the source RPM (https://build.almalinux.org/pulp/content/builds/AlmaLinux-9-src-19450-br/Packages/f/freeradius-3.0.21-40.el9_4.alma.1.src.rpm). That version runs fine. I also ran my tests for proxying with status-server enabled and radiusd works fine sending Status-Server packets. There are no more crashes. So I would consider this issue fixed. Thank you! |
